i continue to be troubled by the almost conscious exclusion of the word "union" from this discourse. i realize that labor leaders were present at the conference as speakers and attendees but it appears that their message - or at least the importance of labor's involvement - is not getting through.

the fact is that without unions we cannot lift people out of poverty into living wage jobs that provide workers and their families with dignity and security . we cannot rely on the enlightened self-interest of corporations to allocate a fair piece of the pie to the workers who create the wealth. we cannot assume that government will protect these workers. our only choice is to support workers and their rights to form a union.
