From all accounts, Van Jones — founder of the Ella Baker Center, current head of Green For All and longtime Friend-of-PolicyLink — gave a stem-winder of a closing keynote at this year’s Netroots Nation conference last month. The super-smart folks over at Talking Points Memo grabbed him for an interesting interview during the conference. Jones repeats his mantra, “Green Jobs, Not Jail,” to full effect.

“What is the meaning of this green movement for people who can’t afford a hybrid?”

Van Jones offers wonderful insight on establishing a new perspective on what it means to “go green,” one that I certainly had not heard before. I think that Jones’ green philosophy is essential to building a strong and inclusive movement that creates a space where ALL people can have a role in the greening of our country and the planet.

Van Jones has really been instrumental in broadening the green discussion in America. You can feel the debate changing nationwide, with much more emphasis on how environmental decisions impact low-income communities and communities of color. We’ve all still got a lot of work to do, but Van Jones has certainly helped the cause gain traction.
